Obtaining your first British passport or renewing an existing one is a significant milestone, but the application process comes with strict requirements. At Immigration Street Legal, we provide expert guidance to ensure your application is accurate, complete, and submitted without unnecessary delays.

Here is everything you need to know about applying for a British passport.

Who is Eligible for a British Passport?

To apply for a British passport, you must hold a form of British nationality. While this is most commonly British citizenship, it can also include other categories such as British overseas territories citizenship or British subject status.

First Adult Passport: You can apply for a first adult passport if you are aged 16 or over (or will turn 16 within the next 3 weeks) and have never held a UK passport before. An adult passport is typically valid for 10 years. If you are applying for your very first adult passport, you may be required to attend a brief identity interview so your identity can be confirmed.

First Child Passport: If you are applying for a child under the age of 16, they will need a child passport, which is valid for 5 years. The adult making the application must have parental responsibility for the child.

How to Apply

There are three primary ways to submit your passport application from within the UK:

  • Apply Online: Applying online is the cheapest and most efficient method. You will need to upload a digital photo and pay via a debit or credit card. As part of the process, you will provide the email address of someone who can securely confirm your identity online.

  • Apply by Post (Paper Form): You can pick up a paper application form from a participating Post Office. Paper forms must be carefully filled out in black biro and capital letters, ensuring you do not write outside the designated boxes. Applying by post is slightly more expensive and takes longer than the online route.

  • Post Office Check & Send: For an additional fee, Post Office staff can assist you with your digital or paper application. They will check that your form is filled out correctly, verify that your photos meet the strict guidelines, and ensure you have all the right supporting documents before sending everything to HM Passport Office via Special Delivery.

Required Supporting Documents

Sending the correct supporting paperwork is crucial. HM Passport Office requires original documents—photocopies will not be accepted. Furthermore, if any of your documents are not in English or Welsh, they must be accompanied by a certified translation.

Depending on your specific circumstances and when you were born, you may need to provide:

  • Your full birth or adoption certificate showing your parents' details.

  • Your certificate of naturalisation or registration (if you registered as a citizen).

  • The foreign passport you used to travel into the UK.

  • Your parents' birth certificates, marriage certificate, or passport details.

  • Proof of a name change (such as a marriage certificate or deed poll) if your current name is different from your supporting documents.

Confirming Your Identity: When applying for a first passport, you will need a "countersignatory" to confirm your identity. This individual must be aged 18 or older, hold a current British or Irish passport, and have known you personally for at least two years. They cannot be related to you by birth or marriage, nor can they live at the same address as you.
